    报告摘要:
Many adjacent ecosystems are linked by cross-ecosystem resource subsidies, which are important ecological flows of energy and nutrients. Examples include leaf litter and invertebrates falling into streams, salmon carcasses returning to freshwater, etc. In a series of experiments we have tested hypotheses about the quantitative consequences of the resource flows on recipient consumer populations and communities. Using experimental augmentation or exclusion of leaf litter or terrestrial invertebrates to streams we have demonstrated that consumer populations are often limited by the rates of flows of these resources. The quality and timing of these resource inputs is also important, demonstrating an adaptation to the consistency of these inputs. Land management, as in management of riparian area during forest harvesting, can alter the magnitude, quality and timing of these flows. Our theory has now developed to a stage where we can test specific hypotheses about how shifts in the magnitude, quality and timing of cross-ecosystem resource subsidies can affect recipient populations and their communities.
